Town Hall Meeting: H1N1 Swine Flu Virus

Dianne Primavera State Representative, House District 33

Dear Neighbors,

I am hosting a town hall meeting Thursday evening on the topic of H1N1 Influenza (swine flu). With winter right around the corner and flu season already underway,  I want to provide a forum for the questions you might have regarding H1N1 Influenza. Please join me this Thursday, October 22nd, for a community forum on this topic. All are invited to learn more about the risks, the realities, and how to protect yourself and your family.   We will hear from Sara Russell Rodriguez, RN, MPH, from Tri County Health.

THE REALITY OF H1N1 INFLUENZA (SWINE FLU)

Rep. Dianne Primavera Teams up with Tri-County Health

When:                  Thursday, October 22, 2009  6:30- 8:00 PM

Where:                 Arapahoe Ridge Elementary School

13095 Pecos Street, Westminster

INTERIM COMMITTEE WORK

During the interim, I serve on five committees.  Click on the links below to learn more or to see our upcoming meeting dates which you are welcome to attend:

·         Transportation Legislation Review Committee (member)

·         Waste Tire Task Force (member)

·         Cancer, Cardiovascular and Cardiopulmonary Task Force (member)

·         Legislative Audit Committee (Chair)

As you might have seen in the news, one of the main topics during the last meeting was CollegeInvest, a division of the state Department of Education. CollegeInvest is supposed to help young Coloradans pay for college, but "it seems like more money has been put into running the organization than getting kids in school." (Denver Post, 10/06/2009)

·         Interim Committee on the Developmentally Disabled Waitlist (Chair):

We're trying to find efficient ways to shorten the waiting lists for the home-and community-based services waivers for children with developmental disabilities.  We'll be making specific recommendations to the House and Senate Health and Human Services Committees soon. During the interim, we have heard testimonies by affected families at every meeting. We will be formalizing legislation in the remaining two meetings.

A complete list of 2009 interim committees is here

As always, I enjoy hearing from you.  Please be in touch if there is something you would like to share.

Sincerely,

State Representative Dianne Primavera

News from the Capitol

Dianne Primavera State Representative, House District 33

Dear neighbors,

I am hosting a community forum tomorrow evening on the topic of Green Jobs---where to get one, and how to prepare yourself with marketable skills.  With all this talk about Green Jobs, I thought we should let everyone know how to prepare themselves with a 'green resume.'  Here in Colorado, we are in the midst of some of the most cutting edge workforce training programs, research, and employers of the new energy economy.  This presents tremendous opportunity for people in our community to take advantage of these green jobs.  Please join me this Monday, August 31st for a community forum on this topic.  I have invited 4 panelists (click here for a complete list), including Veterans Green Jobs who will share information on programs for  veterans. All job seekers wondering how they can participate in the new energy economy are invited to attend.

Interim Committee Work

During the interim, I serve on five committees (click on the links below to learn more or to see our upcoming meeting dates which you are always welcome to attend:

Transportation Legislation Review Committee (member)

You can read about our field trip to a waste tire plant last month here. Did you know Colorado is home to more waste tires than any other state?  I sponsored legislation to address this last session, but there is still more to be done to address the public safety issue.

Waste Tire Task Force (member)

Cancer, Cardiovascular and Cardiopulmonary Task Force (member)

Legislative Audit Committee (Chair)

Interim Committee on the Developmentally Disabled Waitlist (Chair):  The committee is charged with studying the waiting lists for the home-and community-based services waivers for children with developmental disabilities.  The committee must submit a report to the General Assembly that includes specific recommendations for reducing the waiting lists for children's home- and community-based services waivers to the House and Senate Health and Human Services committees by December 15, 2009.

A complete list of 2009 interim committees is here.

Broomfield Days- free mammograms

Look for me at Broomfield Days Saturday, September 19th.  I have partnered with Exempla to provide an on-site van to provide free mammograms to women. They will accept most forms of insurance (except Kaiser) and no one is turned away because of inability to pay. To schedule your free mammogram, please call (303) 837-6800.  As a breast cancer survivor, I know the importance of regular screenings. One in seven women in Colorado will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

H1N1 Update

With cooler weather and flu season approaching, lots of new H1N1 "Swine Flu" questions have started coming up.  Lots of good information can be found through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, found here.  I have been contacted by many constituents concerned about "mandatory vaccines."  First things first, all the proposed vaccination campaigns are voluntary.  Whether through private insurers, clinics, or through the state; choosing whether or not to be vaccinated is a personal choice.  Though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have advised certain groups of people to seek the vaccine when it is released, these are recommendations to be taken into account when considering your likelihood to get the flu.

The first shipment of H1N1 vaccine is expected to arrive in Colorado as early as mid-October.  While the categories of those advised to seek vaccinations are still are being considered, the likely groups include school-age children, children who attend preschool or child care facilities, adults with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, and health-care workers.

And the simple advice is often best: as always, keep washing those hands.

Thank you for your interest in your state government.  I enjoy hearing from you and it makes my job easier if I know what my constituents are thinking, so please be in touch!

News from the Capitol

Dianne Primavera State Representative, House District 33

It is turning into another hot, gorgeous Colorado summer! But even though the 2009 legislative session ended in May, that doesn't mean my work is over.   Here is some interesting news and exciting upcoming events:
"GOVERNMENT AT THE GROCERY" JULY 18th
I will be visiting the Safeway at 3602 W. 144th Ave in Broomfield on July 18th at 10:00 AM to meet with you, my constituents, for "Government at the Grocery." Come say hello! I'd like to hear your input and suggestions. For more information, visit my website.
INTERIM COMMITTEE MEETINGS
THE PINNACOL COMMITTEE IS READY TO GO
The Pinnacol Interim Committee was set up this session to ensure Colorado policyholders are paying the lowest premiums possible, that injured workers are getting the medical care and benefits they need to get back to work, and that Colorado's "workers compensation insurer of last resort" is stable, successful and solvent. The hearing dates are: August 4, 14, 31; September 4, 18 and October 16. We'd like to hear your input! All hearings are open to the public. For times and locations of the meetings, follow this link.
FISCAL STABILITY COMMISSION IS GETTING TO WORK
This commission is given the charge of studying all matters relating to the fiscal stability of Colorado, including but not limited to solutions for higher education and transportation funding, affordable access to health care, kindergarten through twelfth grade education, state-owned assets, and the creation and adequate funding of a state rainy day fund. The first meeting is Thursday, July 9, 2009 in HCR 0112 from 9 AM to 5 PM, which will include a think tank presentation at 2:40 PM. Come and tell your legislators what kind of Colorado you want! All hearings are open to the public.  On Wednesday, July 29th, the Commission will be taking public testimony.  Click here for times and locations of the hearings.
COLORADO HOUSE TO RETURN $900,000 TO STATE FROM GENERAL ASSEMBLY BUDGET
We take seriously the idea that the taxpayers are our bosses, the money we spend is theirs, and we are accountable to them. The Colorado House of Representatives - including the Majority Democrats, the Minority Republicans, and the administrative divisions - will return approximately $900,000 from its operating budget to the State's General Fund for the last fiscal year which ended June 30th. House staff and leaders have consistently been wise stewards of the budget.
LOCAL WEBSITE GIVES DETAILS ON STIMULUS FUNDS
A coalition of contractors and economic-development leaders has established a website to allow businesses to share information about federal economic-stimulus dollars and opportunities. The Web page, StimulusColorado.org, aims to keep businesses up to date on funds available for projects dealing with energy, infrastructure, health care and small-business loans. Also, information on tax breaks will be posted.
NEW LAWS IN EFFECT AS OF JULY 1st
A whopping 57 new laws from last session have gone into effect as of July 1st, 2009. While some bills help consumers, others aim to jump-start the economy and create jobs.  A number of others provide support for laid-off workers and aim to make healthcare more affordable.  For a partial list, visit the House Majority website.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY-ROAD TO RECOVERY FOR LOCAL CANCER SURVIVORS
The American Cancer Society is currently looking for volunteers for its Road to Recovery program. Road to Recovery recruits volunteers to drive area cancer survivors to and from their cancer treatments. Presently, there is a shortage of volunteers serving the Denver area. As a cancer survivor myself, I know the side effects of the chemotherapy or radiation are draining and debilitating. For more information on volunteering as a driver or to learn more about the program, contact Lynn Cogley at 720-524-5472, or email her at Lynn.Cogley@cancer.org.

JOIN BROOMFIELD'S PAPERLESS ELECTRONIC INFORMATION LOOP
Broomfield just launched its electronic information newsletter! "B in the Loop" allows you to 'go green' and sign up for email updates from various city departments - such as City Council, the Library, Public Arts, and Recreation - regarding things you want to know. To subscribe, follow this link.

COLORADO STEMS CELLS CURE FUND EARNS $65,000 IN FIRST YEAR
Last year, Colorado added a new checkoff box to its tax forms: an opportunity to donate to the Adult Stem Cells Cure Fund. This fund provides additional resources to encourage and enable new mothers across Colorado to donate their babies' umbilical cord blood following birth. Cord blood contains adult stem cells that can be used to treat patients who have been diagnosed with life-threatening diseases. After one year alone, we now have $65,000 in revenue to help fund blood donation and research to help adults in need. As the sponsor of House Bill 08-1372, I am proud to see the program taking off in its first year, thanks to the generosity of Coloradans. Look  for the check off box on your state tax form again next year.

FOR DOG LOVERS: WHY DOES MY DOG DO THAT?
As a dog lover (I own two Airedale Terriers) I thought I would pass this along to all you dog owners out there. For those of you wanting to better understand your dog's behavior, you can learn more on Tuesday, August 11th at 2:00 PM at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library. Dog behavior therapist and trainer Barbara Marty will give a presentation.

Thank you for your interest in your state government.  I hope you had a great 4th of July!
To contact me, please write, call or email (or stop by Safeway on the 18th!):
